I Just Wanna Go Home!
Does Your Website Need a Home Link?
Since the inception of the internet, a lot has changed but one thing remains the same, a "home" page. We are occasionally asked our opinion by clients on whether they should add a home link or not on their website. Our answer is a resounding "YES", and here's why:
Some may say that the current informal standard is for a company logo to be clickable and for it to link to the homepage. So why add another link? We serve many demographics such as the Baby Boomers, Generation X, Y and Z - some are more tech-savvy than others, and for those that aren't, the clickable logo is not always obvious.
With that in mind, we ask - "why not make it easy for ALL users?" Combining that with the fact that users often enter websites from an interior page (non-home page), it becomes clear that easy access to the home page provides a new starting point for those who are on the wrong page or want to go to other parts of the site.
Your website is your most important marketing tool and your goal should be to provide the best possible user experience - one element of this experience is the ability to easily find their way to the home page. Eliminating the home link is one trend we don't need to follow as it could potentially frustrate users. Don't make your users over think - the more a user has to think, the more annoyed they can become and as a result exit your site before becoming a converted visitor.
So yes, add a home link - you have nothing to lose!! If it ain’t broke, why fix it?
